Generally, unless the function is a staff party, the lighting effects should be more subtle. The last thing you want at an important evening is a DJ putting on a laser light show (unless that's what you asked for, of course).
It's the corporate DJ's role to set the mood for all your guests with the use of music and lighting. It should normally be a more subtle approach in the beginning of the evening building up to a more vibrant vibe as the night gets into full swing on the dance floor.
